SHARK'S FINS
Oriental medicine has used the shark's fin for treating various health afflictions for over 2,000 years. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, shark's fin soup is good for strengthening the waist, supplementing vital energy, nourishing blood, reinvigorating kidneys and lungs, and improving digestion.

Laboratory testing by doctors at Harvard Medical School in 1979 showed that shark cartilage has an antiangiogenic effect on tumors, arresting tumor growths by shrinking the surrounding blood vessel away from the tumor, thus starving the tumor of the supply of water, food and oxygen. Modern nutritionists discover shark's fins to be rich in protein, and the large amount of gelatin contained supports the growth of cartilage. Till date, Western medicine continues to unfold remedies that are regularly used by cultures in the Far East.

At REAP INDONESIA, we purchase shark's fins such as Black-Tipped Shark (Charcharinus limbatus), Shovel-Nosed Shark (Rhinobatos djiddensis), Blue Shark (Prionace glauca), Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and other species from artisanal shark fishermen. Since we are opposed to "finning" sharks, we discourage the practice by purchasing shark's cartilage (commonly known as bones) also, thereby compelling the fishermen to bring home the shark carcasses for processing instead of trashing them at sea. |
